Forkyz Scanner

Forkyz Scanner is an Android application in the OCR category for scanning crossword puzzles. It is designed as a companion to the Forkyz crossword app, helping users convert puzzle material into scan results that can be corrected and passed to another application. The project is distributed as open-source software.

The app supports scanning puzzles with the device camera, from image files, or from PDF documents. Its scanning process is divided into multiple stages rather than treating the entire puzzle as one recognition task. The grid is scanned first, followed by the columns containing the clues. This workflow gives the app separate input for the puzzle layout and its written content.

Scan results can be edited so that recognition errors are corrected before the puzzle is used elsewhere. After review, the resulting puzzle can be shared with other applications, including Forkyz, for playing. This makes the app suited to users who want to move a crossword from a camera capture or stored document into a crossword application.

Forkyz Scanner includes OpenCV for image processing and Tesseract for text recognition, making it a relatively heavyweight Android tool. Language packs for text recognition must be downloaded from the app’s settings before that recognition feature can be used. MirrorNest mirrors the official Android build directly on its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing. This distribution setup provides a catalog copy of the official build while adding a malware scan before download.
