It serves as a scanning companion to the Forkyz crossword app, creating puzzle data that can be corrected before being passed to another application. This solves the chore of re-entering a crossword from a camera capture, image, or document by separating layout recognition from clue recognition.

The app can scan with a device camera, import image files, or read PDF documents. Its process handles the crossword grid first and then scans the columns containing the clues, giving each part of the puzzle its own recognition stage. Users can review and edit the scan results to fix OCR mistakes before sharing the finished puzzle with Forkyz or another compatible application.

It suits crossword players who receive puzzles on paper, as images, or in PDFs and want to continue solving them digitally. OpenCV performs image processing while Tesseract handles text recognition, so Forkyz Scanner is a relatively heavyweight Android utility. Version 8 targets Android 15 and adds an option for including notes from the scanned puzzle.
