GeekTool places live information, images, and web content directly on a Mac desktop, turning unused screen space into a personal monitoring and information panel. It helps users follow changing data without opening separate windows or applications. Its four modules support different kinds of desktop content and can be arranged and styled to suit the workspace. A log-focused module displays the contents of log files so users can watch activity as it happens. The script module runs a script, captures its output, and presents the resulting text on the desktop in a chosen format. It can also show a remote webcam, a network graph saved on a monitoring server, or images from a folder, with automatic refreshing and picture rotation.

The Web module displays an entire web page or renders HTML generated by a user-written script, extending the desktop beyond plain text and static images. These capabilities make GeekTool useful for status dashboards, server monitoring, personal information displays, and rotating visual backgrounds.
