Google Chat

Google Chat lets teams exchange messages, coordinate work, and keep shared tasks visible from Android devices. It supports one-to-one conversations, group chats, and team-wide spaces for projects, departments, and ongoing coordination. Teams using Google Workspace can use it for daily discussions, quick decisions, and collaboration around work that spans several people.

Gemini-based features can summarize conversations, translate messages into more than 120 languages, search discussions, and identify action items. Users can publish personalized status updates, send audio or video messages, and join real-time huddles when text is not enough. Google Chat connects with Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Tasks, and Meet, while smart chips link people, files, and spaces within conversations.

The Google Drive app for Chat helps teams handle requests, comments, and approvals, and add-ons such as PagerDuty, Jira, GitHub, and Workday extend workflows into other services. Chat APIs support no-code, low-code, and pro-code application development, giving organizations ways to build custom Chat apps. Its cloud-native, zero-trust architecture includes AI-assisted data loss prevention, phishing detection, and malware detection; Google says data is not stored on end-user devices and desktop applications do not require patching.

Google Chat is freeware for Android and requires Google Workspace for its team collaboration features. In the current version, Google Workspace customers receive direct messages, group chats, and integration with Google Apps.

Free to use — a paid version with additional features is also available.
