Write playable interactive fiction in natural-language syntax, then test, package, and release it from the same development environment. Inform is the official environment for the Inform programming language, drawing on linguistics and literate programming so that source text can describe stories, rules, characters, and imaginary places in readable prose.

Its detailed project index helps authors manage everything from a small premise such as “Kate is a woman in the Research Lab” to vast worlds with source text exceeding three million words. The app includes two books of documentation and nearly 500 fully working examples, giving newcomers and experienced authors material to study. It can retrieve and update extensions from the curated Public Library used by the worldwide Inform community. Inform also points users toward an active discussion forum and explains how to submit bug reports, while the project is continuously maintained.

Writers use it for literary fiction, game-industry prototyping, and digital-narrative courses at schools and universities. Graham Nelson began the project in 1993, and it reached the Macintosh Programmer’s Workshop in 1995 before becoming an app; today it runs on Linux under an open-source license. Works created with Inform belong to their authors and can be published on a website, sold, or shared with friends.

Version 2.0.3 corrects source hyperlinks that failed to work and fixes the checkmark icon in the Transcript panel.
