About

pixelflood turns a phone or tablet into a full-screen Pixelflut display, receiving text commands over TCP and rendering the resulting pixel buffer. Clients use Pixelflut’s PX command to set individual pixels, making the device a network canvas for generated visuals, collaborative experiments, and live installations. The server listens on port 1234, allowing compatible clients to send updates directly to the display.

Its asynchronous implementation is built for many simultaneous connections, using epoll on Linux or Boost and standalone Asio for networking; with epoll, each open TCP connection uses eight bytes of user-space memory. Epoll can operate in edge-triggered mode, while level-triggered handling is the default because it distributes service more fairly across connections. GLFW and optional GLEW can display the buffer, with fbdev available when GLFW is unavailable and requiring exclusive access to /dev/fb0; optional FreeType can draw the IP address, port, and related details into the buffer. On Linux, increasing the open-file limit can raise the usual 1024-connection ceiling to about 1,000,000, subject to /proc/sys/fs/file-max.

The 1.0.3 release runs on Android 5.0 or later and supports arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, armeabi, x86_64, x86, mips, and mips64 devices. Pressing Del resets and rescales the canvas to the window, closes open connections, and rotating the device performs the same reset. pixelflood is open-source, and contributors can participate through GitHub with an account.
