Snowflake Volunteer connects people to the Tor network through a volunteer proxy when direct access to Tor is blocked. It is designed for people in countries with Internet censorship who need an alternate route to reach Tor and browse online.

The application sends the connection through volunteer proxies operating in countries without Internet censorship before it reaches the Tor network. It uses WebRTC, the same type of technology used by voice and video conferencing software, so the traffic can resemble an audio or video call and be less detectable to censors.

Snowflake Volunteer is an entry-point component rather than a complete censorship-circumvention setup by itself. To browse through it, users need a Tor-based application such as Tor Browser or Orbot, where they select Snowflake in the connection settings. When a person acts as a Snowflake entry point, websites accessed through Tor see the Tor exit node’s IP address instead of the entry point’s address.

Version 1.15 is open-source Android software for arm64-v8a devices running Android 8.0 or later. It suits people who need Tor access in restricted environments and volunteers who provide Snowflake connection paths from less-censored networks.
