Use an NFC-enabled Android device running 6.0 or later to read UltiMaker spool tags or create compatible tags for a 3D printer. UltiMaker filament spools use NFC/RFID data to identify their material and spool details, and Spool Maker can handle both original tags and tags produced by the app.

New tags can be written to writable NTAG media: the original UltiMaker tags examined for the project use NTAG216, while NTAG215 is also supported because its 228-byte payload fits the available user memory, although the maintainer has not tested NTAG215 with an actual UltiMaker printer. Cura and UltiMaker .xml.fdm_material files can be imported into a local material library, where profiles are managed for later use. During writing, choose the material, total spool weight, remaining amount, and, for Spool Maker tags, whether the date represents manufacture, purchase, opening, creation, or no date.

Read results include the tag UID, material GUID, total and remaining quantities, date and time, batch and station data, and integrity information; decoded values and raw tag contents can also be inspected and copied. Before writing, the app checks the tag type along with relevant lock and protection areas, then reads the tag back and verifies it to detect incomplete or failed writes. It operates entirely locally, with no Internet permission, account, ads, trackers, or telemetry.

Version 1.2.4 improves status-bar handling on version 15 and later, including Motorola devices, switches language handling to per-app locales, fixes exclusive language selection, simplifies the read-result page, improves original UltiMaker date display, and cleans up German translations. Spool Maker is open-source and is an independent community project rather than an official UltiMaker product, so compatibility can vary by printer model and firmware version.
