About

Compare two files or directory trees side by side in WinMerge, then inspect their differences and choose which edits to combine. It gives developers and other project maintainers a visual way to review revisions, investigate changed folders, and reconcile separate versions of file-based work.

Changes appear at both the line level and within individual lines, while a location pane maps where differences occur throughout the compared content. A syntax-coloring editor makes source text easier to inspect during review, and Unicode support accommodates content beyond basic character sets. Regular-expression filters can narrow comparisons by matching filenames or lines, helping exclude generated or irrelevant material from a review.

WinMerge integrates with Visual SourceSafe and the Windows Shell, fitting comparison and merging into established Windows file and development workflows. Its directory comparison reveals additions, removals, and altered files before selected updates are merged, while a multilingual interface serves users in several languages. Although its integrations are Windows-oriented, the software is also available for MacOS.

Published by Dean Grimm, WinMerge is categorized under Developer Tools and is open-source. It suits programmers, release reviewers, and anyone who needs to examine changes across file-based projects before merging selected revisions.
