A Better Finder Rename12.36

A Better Finder Rename renames hundreds or thousands of files, photos, music tracks, and RAW+JPEG pairs in one batch instead of requiring individual edits. It addresses the tedious, error-prone work of applying consistent names to large collections.

Files can be added by dragging them from Finder, then sorted alphabetically, by creation or capture date, or manually rearranged with drag and drop. A live preview updates as you define the changes, so every resulting name can be checked before the batch is applied. Renaming actions include sequence numbers, regular expressions, character and text changes, position-based edits, conversions, truncation, and multi-step processing organized across 15 categories.

Photographers can use EXIF capture dates and preserve the relationship between RAW files and their matching JPEGs, while music collectors can draw names from ID3 tags. Names can also be imported from a spreadsheet, making the program useful for archival projects, production workflows, photo shoots, and large personal media libraries.

The current version is 12.36 and is freeware for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 Sequoia or later; the developer’s version-specific note also names macOS 13 Ventura and macOS 14 Sonoma. Developed by Frank Reiff and refined since 1996, it is aimed at professionals, businesses, and hobbyists who need precise batch renaming rather than broader system maintenance.
