Exchange instant messages from one Mac client while keeping conversations in a focused desktop workspace. Adium connects to instant-messaging services operated by other providers; it does not host those services itself. Its support for many different messaging services comes through the libpurple protocol library, allowing users to bring conversations from their existing services into one application.

Tabbed chat windows keep several conversations organized, while themeable WebKit-based message views let users change the appearance of chats. Adium integrates directly with the macOS Contacts app and can combine contacts so a person appears as one entry instead of being split across separate accounts. Its event system can deliver visual alerts through Growl and macOS Notification Center. Xtras and other customization features provide additional ways to tailor the interface, and the application is available in 27 languages.

Adium suits people who use multiple instant-messaging services, need a desktop chat client, or want conversations and contacts presented in a Mac-native environment. The 1.5.10.4 version supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, uses the Cocoa API, and is distributed as freeware under the GNU GPL as an open-source project developed by volunteers and Adium contributors. Its code is available for inspection and improvement, with contributions welcomed in areas such as programming, translations, and artwork.
