Afterglow runs classic After Dark screen saver modules on modern Mac computers, recreating Flying Toasters, Fish!, Starry Skyline, and other familiar animations. It uses the original 68k module code rather than remaking or porting each screen saver, preserving their distinctive behavior and visual character. Built specifically for this software family, it avoids the inconsistent speeds and complicated configuration associated with older emulators and vintage hardware.

Users can drag module files, disk images, or compressed archives into the app; Afterglow finds the modules inside, extracts them, and imports them automatically. Modules can also be browsed and installed from the Internet Archive without leaving the app, although the screen saver modules themselves are not bundled with the program. An included modern screen saver module lets the imported collection appear during normal screen-saver use, including on the Liquid Glass lock screen.

The app suits Macintosh preservation enthusiasts and anyone who wants the playful, surreal, or artistic After Dark experience in everyday use. Its Musashi 68k CPU emulator supplies the processor, while a focused reimplementation of Macintosh Toolbox and operating-system APIs provides what the modules need to run. Afterglow is freeware for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, with a universal binary for Intel and Apple Silicon, and it requires neither Apple ROMs nor a classic Mac OS installation. Current version 1.1.
