About
Ahoy turns a project’s YAML file into a shareable, self-documenting command-line interface for repeatable workflows, replacing manually remembered command sequences with named actions. It wraps shell commands, npm scripts, Docker operations, SSH commands, and other tools without requiring code or dependencies. Each repository or workspace gets its own CLI with a command listing, per-command help, aliases, multiline descriptions, and shell tab completion. Commands run relative to .ahoy.yml, so they can be called from any subdirectory while retaining consistent behavior.
It is particularly useful for running interactive commands inside Docker containers, such as opening a MySQL session in a docker-compose service, but it also handles local commands, aliases with complex parameters, and interactive prompts. Imports allow commands to be divided among multiple YAML files; later definitions replace earlier duplicates, while optional imports can be skipped when files are absent. Environment files can be loaded at file or command level, and Ahoy injects AHOY_COMMAND_NAME and AHOY_CMD into every command. The supplied example includes more than 20 commands for environment actions such as up, down, and restart, along with testing, linting, database work, build and deployment tasks, and Drupal integration.
Ahoy is open-source software for x64 Windows 10 and later, including Windows Server 2016 and later. Version 3.0.2 fixes three regressions from 3.0.0, restoring interactive and full-screen programs while keeping stderr connected to the terminal and displaying long-running output as it is produced instead of buffering it. It also adds a new feature, and users running 3.0.0 should upgrade because two of those regressions could silently change command arguments even when the wrapped command exited successfully.

What's new in v3.0.2
A patch release that fixes a v3 regression in tab completion, and makes release downloads verifiable. If you use a completion script written for Ahoy v2, please upgrade. In v3.0.0 and v3.0.1, pressing Tab after a command name could run that command. Fixes Tab completion no longer (accidentally) runs your commands. #193, reported and fixed by @hanoii in #194. Completion scripts from the v2 (urfave/cli) era, including the bash script in our own docs, work by adding --generate-bash-completion to the words typed so far: opts=$( ${COMP_WORDS[@]:0:$COMP_CWORD} --generate-bash-completion ) So ahoy deploy <TAB> runs ahoy deploy --generate-bash-completion. Since v3.0.0, Ahoy's own flags are only recognised before the command name. That meant the flag was passed to deploy as an ordinary argument, and deploy ran. ──────────────────────────────────────┬──────────────────┬─────── Typed │v3.0.1 │v3.0.2 ──────────────────────────────────────┼──────────────────┼─────── ahoy foo <TAB> │runs foo │nothing ──────────────────────────────────────┼──────────────────┼─────── ahoy foo dis<TAB> │runs foo dis │nothing ──────────────────────────────────────┼──────────────────┼─────── ahoy bar <TAB> (bar imports baz and │prints help for │baz qux qux) │bar │ ──────────────────────────────────────┼──────────────────┼─────── ahoy bar ba<TAB> │prints help for │baz qux │bar │ ──────────────────────────────────────┴──────────────────┴─────── A --generate-bash-completion that comes last is now treated as a completion request. Ahoy lists the subcommands of the command you typed and runs nothing, as v2 did. Anywhere else in the arguments, it still reaches your command unchanged, so wrapped tools that take a flag of that name still receive it. Cleaner completion from ahoy completion <shell> The same PR fixes the completion scripts that ahoy completion bash|zsh|fish|powershell generates, when you complete the first word after ahoy: - Each command is listed once, instead of twice. - Hidden commands, such as __complete and anything marked hide: true, are no longer suggested. - Suggestions now match what you've typed. ahoy f<TAB> gives foo fo instead of the full command list. - Aliases are still offered alongside command names. Completion of subcommands and of later arguments is unchanged. Thanks - @hanoii (Ariel Barreiro) for reporting #193 with a clear before-and-after table, and for the fix and tests in #194. This is Ariel's second regression fix in two releases. Full changelog - #190, #192 Include the raw binaries in the checksums file, and sign it with cosign - #194 Stop legacy completion from running commands (@hanoii), fixes #193 - Updated the README sponsors section Full diff: v3.0.1...v3.0.2
