Amazon CloudWatch Agent collects metrics, logs, and traces so administrators can observe operating conditions inside their systems. On Amazon EC2, it gathers in-guest system metrics alongside the standard metrics provided for the instance. It also captures system-level metrics from on-premises servers, including machines in hybrid environments and servers that AWS does not manage.

The agent accepts custom application and service metrics through StatsD and collectd protocols. StatsD supports Linux servers and Windows Server, while collectd is available only on Linux servers. Log collection covers Amazon EC2 instances and on-premises servers running Linux or Windows Server.

It also receives OpenTelemetry and AWS X-Ray traces, extending monitoring beyond host statistics and log files. Its processing model starts an OpenTelemetry Collector and runs pipelines that may combine Telegraf components, OpenTelemetry components, and customized components; Telegraf and the OpenTelemetry Collector are open-source dependencies. These capabilities suit administrators and developers handling operational data across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises systems.
