About

AntConc lets researchers load a collection of texts and inspect how words and phrases are used in context, turning a corpus into searchable evidence instead of requiring file-by-file reading. Its concordance view displays occurrences with surrounding text, while wildcard searches help locate variable patterns; a question mark represents any single character and can be escaped when the literal symbol is required. Word lists, keyword comparisons, clusters or n-grams, collocate analysis, and distribution plots support frequency, association, and placement studies.

Users can assemble a corpus from their own text files, define tokens, search across documents, and trace results back to the passages where they occur. AntConc serves linguists, language teachers, students, translators, and researchers conducting corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, vocabulary studies, or literary and register comparisons. Typical tasks include checking a phrase’s grammatical surroundings, comparing specialist vocabularies, and finding repeated patterns in teaching or research corpora.

AntLab Solutions publishes AntConc for Windows in the System Tools category, and the current 4.4.2 release uses x64 architecture. The program is freeware and runs on desktop computers rather than mobile devices such as iPhones, Android phones, iPads, or Chromebooks. UTF-8 is its default text encoding, so files saved in another encoding can trigger decoding errors until they are resaved as UTF-8. Its combination of direct concordance searching and complementary statistical and visual views distinguishes it from a plain text editor for examining language in real use.
