About
AppLocate finds the installation directory of a Windows application and can also reveal its executable, configuration files, and other relevant paths. It searches registry entries, Start Menu shortcuts, running processes, PATH directories, Windows services, MSIX packages, and package managers including Scoop, Chocolatey, and WinGet. The search covers MSI-installed software, MSIX and Store apps, portable applications, and other software managed by common package systems.
All discovery sources run in parallel, after which AppLocate merges and deduplicates their results and ranks them by confidence. Its command-line output is deterministic JSON, CSV, or plain text, making the results suitable for scripts that back up configurations, migrate software, troubleshoot installations, or locate an executable quickly. The utility includes applocate.exe and PowerShell-friendly functions, and it can be invoked directly or through PATH-based commands.
Without --all, the tool returns up to three high-confidence executables from different directories, pairing each with its installation directory; alternate installed versions may also appear. It selects one best configuration or data result, prioritizing machine scope over user scope and richer supporting evidence, while --all exposes every distinct match for investigating alternate roots or ranking behavior. AppLocate is a Windows CLI utility for administrators, developers, and support users who need local application discovery without running the files it finds or making network calls.
Version 0.1.6 targets Windows x64, and the project also provides a Windows ARM64 binary. It requires no administrator privileges, returns structured results with a zero status when it finds results or displays help without arguments, and stable releases are available through WinGet while alpha, beta, and release-candidate builds are excluded from that channel.
Architecture: x64
