About
Atuin replaces a shell’s ordinary command-history file with a SQLite database, giving you a structured record of commands you have run. It captures more than the command text, preserving context such as the working directory, execution time, duration, exit status, host, and shell session. This makes past commands easier to locate when you remember where or how they ran but not the exact wording.
From the terminal, you can invoke Atuin’s interactive history search and filter results as you type instead of repeatedly cycling through earlier entries. Commands can be recalled directly into the shell for editing or rerunning, while the database keeps history available for later searches across long working sessions. Its distinction is the combination of a searchable local database and contextual records rather than a simple chronological text log.
Atuin suits developers, administrators, and other terminal users who frequently revisit build commands, maintenance operations, or lengthy one-line scripts. It is intended for Windows systems and is used alongside the shell in which commands are entered. Atuin is open-source software, and its operation centers on replacing the existing shell-history workflow with its SQLite-backed record.
