About
AusweisApp lets you identify yourself online with the eID function of a German identity card, electronic residence permit, or eID card. It encrypts the exchange of identity data between your document and the online service, so you can authenticate securely from home.
The app establishes the protected connection between the service provider, your identity document, and an NFC-capable smartphone or card reader. During identification, the document’s data is read using a suitable NFC smartphone or USB card reader, after which participating online services can verify your identity. The online identification function must be activated, and you need a six-digit PIN, the installed AusweisApp, and either an NFC-capable smartphone or a USB card reader.
Typical uses include accessing government services and other participating providers that accept the German eID process. Lists of compatible smartphones, tablets, and USB card readers help you determine which companion device can read your document.
On MacOS, AusweisApp 2.5.5 is freeware in the Security & Privacy category and runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later with Intel and Apple Silicon processors.
