About

AVRDUDE MinGW transfers programming data to AVR microcontrollers, letting users place firmware into the chip’s on-chip memories from Windows. It can write Flash and EEPROM contents, and it can set fuse and lock bits when the selected programming protocol supports them. The command-line program accepts programmer-specific options, and running avrdude without arguments displays its available options.

A typical use sends a HEX file such as blink.hex to an Arduino Uno connected through COM1. AVRDUDE also provides a direct-instruction mode for issuing programming commands to an AVR chip, including instructions the utility does not otherwise recognize. Starting with version 8, the package includes a demonstrator GUI built on Qt and Python’s PySide bindings, supporting either Qt5 with PySide2 or Qt6 with PySide6.

It suits embedded developers, Arduino users, and electronics hobbyists working with AVR-based boards, programmers, and custom hardware. The Windows x64 MinGW build is intended for MSYS2’s 64-bit MinGW environment; the separate MSVC 64-bit build is recommended for most Windows users, with MinGW available when the known MSVC limitations are unacceptable.

AVRDUDE MinGW 8.3 is published by AVR Dudes under an open-source license. Static builds are recommended for Arduino users, but they omit libserialport support because of a cross-build-container limitation; the GUI launcher, avrdude-gui, is installed beside the command-line program.

Architecture: x64

What's new in v8.3

See Release Notes for changes The source code .sig files have been signed by Stefan Rueger and can be verified with the OpenPGP public key 45684AB70D286F63. For example, gpg --keyserver keys.openpgp.org --recv-keys 45684AB70D286F63 will ingress the public signing key into your keyring and gpg --verify avrdude-8.3.tar.gz.sig avrdude-8.3.tar.gz verifies the hash of the source tar ball. Preferred Windows binaries to use: avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip --> Windows MSVC 64 bit avrdude-v8.3-windows-mingw-x64.zip --> Windows MSYS2 mingw 64 bit Static build binaries (*.tar.gz) are recommended for Arduino users. Take note they do not contain libserialport support due to the limitation of the crossbuild container. Notes for the avrdude Windows binaries (static linked to the dependency libraries) : 1. MSVC build is recommended for most Windows users unless you hit known limitations (see below). The majority of users should download avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip. In case one of limitations below is unacceptable you may want to download avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip. 2. Known limitation for the above MSVC build (avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows-x86.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows-arm64.zip) - #1552 (no libserialport support) - #1253 (slow speed when using arduino-ft232r or similar programmer) - #968 (not working with USB Composite Device programmer like Microchip PICKit 5 and USBASP with the FW from https://github.com/dioannidis/usbasp) - #1440 (no support of CH341A) 3. Known limitation for the MSYS2 mingw build (avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-clang-x64.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-ucrt-x64.zip) - You will have to use Zadig to switch the FTDI vendor driver if you use libftdi based programmer (eg: ft232h, ft2232h, arduino-ft232r) - #1271 (timeout may be more likely to happen for urclock in terminal mode) Notes for the Linux binaries: Please use chmod u+x to make the binary executable. The Linux binaries are static linked to dependency libraries. They are provided as is and are expected to work for most Linux distros within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. Notes for the macOS binary: The macOS x86_64 binary is static linked to dependency libraries. It is provided as is and is expected to work for most macOS versions within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. You may need to follow the guide below to allow the execution of the macOS binary. https://support.apple.com/en-sg/guide/mac-help/mh40617/mac Notes for Windows Python GUI binary Please check out the following link to see how you can run it. - #1946
