About

Program AVR microcontrollers from a Windows command line with AVRDUDE MinGW Clang, sending firmware and other programming instructions through a compatible programmer. It reads and writes the on-chip memories of Microchip AVR devices, including Flash and EEPROM, and can set fuse and lock bits when the selected programming protocol supports them.

The utility can also issue direct instructions to an AVR chip, giving advanced users access beyond its standard memory operations. A typical task is writing a HEX file such as blink.hex to an Arduino Uno connected through COM1, although the correct programmer and command-line options depend on the hardware and protocol in use. Since version 8, the package also includes a GUI demonstrator for libavrdude, started with the avrdude-gui script installed alongside the command-line program; it uses Qt with either PySide2 on Qt5 or PySide6 on Qt6.

Published by AVR Dudes for Windows on x64 systems, version 8.3 is distributed as open-source software. The Windows MSVC 64-bit build is recommended for most users, while the MSYS2 MinGW 64-bit build suits cases affected by known MSVC limitations. Static .tar.gz builds are recommended for Arduino users, but they omit libserialport support because of a cross-build container limitation. AVRDUDE’s source signatures are signed by Stefan Rueger and can be checked with OpenPGP key 45684AB70D286F63.

Architecture: x64

What's new in v8.3

See Release Notes for changes The source code .sig files have been signed by Stefan Rueger and can be verified with the OpenPGP public key 45684AB70D286F63. For example, gpg --keyserver keys.openpgp.org --recv-keys 45684AB70D286F63 will ingress the public signing key into your keyring and gpg --verify avrdude-8.3.tar.gz.sig avrdude-8.3.tar.gz verifies the hash of the source tar ball. Preferred Windows binaries to use: avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip --> Windows MSVC 64 bit avrdude-v8.3-windows-mingw-x64.zip --> Windows MSYS2 mingw 64 bit Static build binaries (*.tar.gz) are recommended for Arduino users. Take note they do not contain libserialport support due to the limitation of the crossbuild container. Notes for the avrdude Windows binaries (static linked to the dependency libraries) : 1. MSVC build is recommended for most Windows users unless you hit known limitations (see below). The majority of users should download avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip. In case one of limitations below is unacceptable you may want to download avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip. 2. Known limitation for the above MSVC build (avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows-x86.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows-arm64.zip) - #1552 (no libserialport support) - #1253 (slow speed when using arduino-ft232r or similar programmer) - #968 (not working with USB Composite Device programmer like Microchip PICKit 5 and USBASP with the FW from https://github.com/dioannidis/usbasp) - #1440 (no support of CH341A) 3. Known limitation for the MSYS2 mingw build (avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-clang-x64.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-ucrt-x64.zip) - You will have to use Zadig to switch the FTDI vendor driver if you use libftdi based programmer (eg: ft232h, ft2232h, arduino-ft232r) - #1271 (timeout may be more likely to happen for urclock in terminal mode) Notes for the Linux binaries: Please use chmod u+x to make the binary executable. The Linux binaries are static linked to dependency libraries. They are provided as is and are expected to work for most Linux distros within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. Notes for the macOS binary: The macOS x86_64 binary is static linked to dependency libraries. It is provided as is and is expected to work for most macOS versions within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. You may need to follow the guide below to allow the execution of the macOS binary. https://support.apple.com/en-sg/guide/mac-help/mh40617/mac Notes for Windows Python GUI binary Please check out the following link to see how you can run it. - #1946
