About
It writes firmware and configuration data to AVR microcontrollers, letting users program AVR-based hardware from Windows. Developed by AVR Dudes, AVRDUDE MinGW UCRT is the open-source, x64 Windows build of the AVR Downloader/Uploader utility. It is aimed at embedded developers, electronics hobbyists, and Arduino users working with AVR boards, programmers, and microcontroller prototypes.
The command-line program can upload and retrieve on-chip Flash and EEPROM contents, typically using a HEX firmware file. When the selected programming protocol supports them, it can also set fuse bits and lock bits. Its direct-instruction mode accepts individual programming commands, allowing advanced users to issue instructions to an AVR chip beyond the usual memory operations.
Version 8 also includes a demonstrator GUI built with Qt and Python’s PySide bindings; Qt5 with PySide2 or Qt6 with PySide6 is supported. The accompanying avrdude-gui script is placed alongside the command-line program and includes built-in usage help, while the command avrdude without arguments displays CLI options. A typical use is programming an Arduino Uno connected through COM1 with a file such as blink.hex, although the appropriate programmer and options depend on the hardware.
The current release is version 8.3. The Windows MSVC 64-bit archive is recommended for most users, while the MinGW variant is supplied as avrdude-v8.3-windows-mingw-x64.zip; static tar.gz builds are recommended for Arduino users but omit libserialport because of a cross-build-container limitation. Source-code signature files are signed by Stefan Rueger and can be verified with OpenPGP key 45684AB70D286F63.
Architecture: x64
What's new in v8.3
See Release Notes for changes The source code .sig files have been signed by Stefan Rueger and can be verified with the OpenPGP public key 45684AB70D286F63. For example, gpg --keyserver keys.openpgp.org --recv-keys 45684AB70D286F63 will ingress the public signing key into your keyring and gpg --verify avrdude-8.3.tar.gz.sig avrdude-8.3.tar.gz verifies the hash of the source tar ball. Preferred Windows binaries to use: avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip --> Windows MSVC 64 bit avrdude-v8.3-windows-mingw-x64.zip --> Windows MSYS2 mingw 64 bit Static build binaries (*.tar.gz) are recommended for Arduino users. Take note they do not contain libserialport support due to the limitation of the crossbuild container. Notes for the avrdude Windows binaries (static linked to the dependency libraries) : 1. MSVC build is recommended for most Windows users unless you hit known limitations (see below). The majority of users should download avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip. In case one of limitations below is unacceptable you may want to download avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip. 2. Known limitation for the above MSVC build (avrdude-v8.3-windows-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows-x86.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows-arm64.zip) - #1552 (no libserialport support) - #1253 (slow speed when using arduino-ft232r or similar programmer) - #968 (not working with USB Composite Device programmer like Microchip PICKit 5 and USBASP with the FW from https://github.com/dioannidis/usbasp) - #1440 (no support of CH341A) 3. Known limitation for the MSYS2 mingw build (avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-x64.zip, avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-clang-x64.zip and avrdude-v8.3-windows_mingw-ucrt-x64.zip) - You will have to use Zadig to switch the FTDI vendor driver if you use libftdi based programmer (eg: ft232h, ft2232h, arduino-ft232r) - #1271 (timeout may be more likely to happen for urclock in terminal mode) Notes for the Linux binaries: Please use chmod u+x to make the binary executable. The Linux binaries are static linked to dependency libraries. They are provided as is and are expected to work for most Linux distros within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. Notes for the macOS binary: The macOS x86_64 binary is static linked to dependency libraries. It is provided as is and is expected to work for most macOS versions within the past 5 years. Please build from source in case the binaries do not work for you. You can also report the issue. You may need to follow the guide below to allow the execution of the macOS binary. https://support.apple.com/en-sg/guide/mac-help/mh40617/mac Notes for Windows Python GUI binary Please check out the following link to see how you can run it. - #1946
