Create and manage Azure resources by entering az commands in a terminal, turning recurring cloud administration into repeatable text-based tasks. Microsoft’s Azure CLI 2.90.0 provides a multi-platform command-line experience for Azure on Windows, aimed at people who prefer working from a shell. Its commands span Azure services, so it supports both getting started with resources and carrying out ongoing scripted management.
Results can be displayed as JSON, tables, or TSV, and the --query option uses JMESPath syntax to select and reshape returned data. Tab completion covers command groups, commands, and some parameters, while distinct exit codes help scripts respond to different outcomes. The az resource command handles generic resource operations, az rest sends REST API requests, and proxy-based working is supported.
Cloud administrators, developers, and operations teams can use Azure CLI for repeatable provisioning, resource maintenance, passing one command’s values into another, and other automation workflows. Azure Cloud Shell provides a place to try commands, while the Azure CLI Tools extension for Visual Studio Code supports .azcli files. That extension adds IntelliSense, argument snippets, integrated-terminal execution, side-by-side output, hover documentation, and a status bar showing the active subscription and defaults.
The current Windows release is distributed as freeware. Microsoft may collect information about users and their use of the software to provide services and improve its products, with telemetry configurable through the repository; some features can also enable data collection from users of applications.
