About
Write an operating-system image to an SD card or USB drive from a Windows PC with balenaEtcher, preparing removable media for installation or booting. It verifies that every byte reached the target correctly and helps guard against choosing an internal hard drive as the destination.
The program creates USB installation media from bootable ISO files and supports writing almost any operating system image to almost any flash drive. It can also prepare compatible Raspberry Pi devices that support USB device boot mode. Flashing erases the entire selected drive and replaces its existing data, so the target should be chosen with care.
balenaEtcher suits makers, system administrators, and anyone preparing removable media for a new operating system or Raspberry Pi project. OS publishers can offer its “Flash with Etcher” feature in their own online content, allowing users to start writing their operating system from that page. It is published by Balena Ltd. as an open-source Windows System Tools program for x64 systems.
The current release is version 2.1.9, including a patch that corrects copyright details and another addressing macOS hardening. Windows images require extra treatment to become bootable, and Etcher is not designed to provide that treatment.
