Bean gives Mac users a focused place to write, edit, and format documents, with quick startup, live word counting, and an uncluttered interface designed for comfortable reading. It supports template documents, free-form headers and footers, optional two-page page-layout viewing, dark mode with alternate colors, and full-screen focus editing. A find panel with regular expressions, word completion, a dictionary, a formatting inspector, and selection by text style cover everyday revision and document work.

Bean handles inline graphics, but it cannot position graphics as floating objects, does not support footnotes or stylesheets, and is only partly compatible with Microsoft Word formats. That balance makes it useful for straightforward writing, editing, notes, and documents where a live count and distraction-reduced page view matter more than advanced publishing features. Its audience includes Mac writers, students, and people preparing ordinary text documents who want formatting controls without a large word-processing suite.

The current 3.7.8 release supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 27 Golden Gate, 26 Tahoe, 15 Sequoia, 14 Sonoma, 13 Ventura, 12 Monterey, 11 Big Sur, 10.15 Catalina, 10.14 Mojave, or 10.13 High Sierra. Older systems have separate releases: version 3.2.9 covers Sierra 10.12, 3.2.5 covers OS X 10.5 through 10.11, 3.1.1 supports PowerPC Macs on OS X 10.5, and 2.4.5 supports PowerPC Macs on OS X 10.4. Bean is freeware released under The Bean Word Processor Software License; Bean 3.x is closed source, includes Catalan, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Slovak, and Spanish localizations, and comes without a warranty, with use undertaken at the user's risk.
