About
Bicep CLI compiles Bicep files into Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, converting readable infrastructure definitions into the format used for Azure deployments. Bicep uses a declarative domain-specific language, so authors describe the Azure resources they want rather than writing procedural deployment instructions. The same file can be reused throughout development and deployment to reproduce infrastructure consistently.
Published by Microsoft Azure, Bicep CLI is a Windows command-line utility for people who create or maintain Azure infrastructure definitions. The current 0.47.16 release is freeware and concentrates on compilation rather than providing a general-purpose development environment. Azure CLI 2.20.0 or later and the PowerShell Az module 5.6.0 or later include Bicep support, allowing standard deployment commands to accept .bicep files while the tooling transpiles them and sends the result to ARM.
Authors commonly write Bicep with the language service provided by the Bicep VS Code extension before compiling or deploying their files. Existing ARM templates and Azure resources can be moved toward Bicep through ARM-template decompilation workflows. Azure Verified Modules and the azure-quickstart-templates repository supply reusable modules and examples, while Bicep Playground supports trying the language in a browser. Production-ready, tested templates are also available through the bicep-registry-modules repository.
