Bookends collects references, PDFs, notes, and annotations so students and professionals can build bibliographies while researching and writing. It imports references and PDFs, with access privileges potentially required, from PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Google Books, Web of Science, arXiv, the Library of Congress, and hundreds of institutions worldwide.

The app can locate publications that cite items in your library, import them, and retrieve citation and publication metrics from trusted online sources. An ORCID ID can generate an up-to-date, interactive list of your publications and the works that cite them. Unlimited hierarchical folders and static or smart groups organize the library, while self-updating Term Lists help reuse recurring metadata.

Attachments can include PDFs, images, Word documents, or other files, which Bookends can rename and arrange in a central location; searches cover both reference records and attached PDF contents. Its PDF reader supports markup and annotations, connects them to an interactive note stream, shares them with other PDF readers and Bookends for iOS, and creates deep links to specific annotations and thoughts. On iPad, Bookends for iOS and Mellel Mobile support writing, citing, and scanning.

Bookends works with imports from EndNote, Papers, Sente, Zotero, and Mendeley, embeds live links for Tinderbox, DEVONthink, and Scrivener, and integrates with Microsoft Word, Mellel, and Nisus Writer Pro. Citation Inspectors in Word and Mellel expose reference details, notes, and PDF annotations during composition, while AppleScript support connects it to macOS automation. Bookends 15.4.4 is freeware for macOS on Intel and Apple Silicon.
