About
Choose Cascadia Mono PL as the typeface for terminal text to display command-line characters and Powerline status symbols in one consistent design. Its monospaced layout keeps each character at a fixed position, helping prompts, tables, and shell output remain aligned. Microsoft publishes it as a freeware Windows System Tools font resource, with current version 2404.23.0 rather than as a standalone application.
The design combines Cascadia Mono with embedded Powerline glyphs used by terminal themes and status-line environments. Unlike Cascadia Code, it omits programming ligatures, so character sequences remain separate glyphs instead of being visually combined. This makes it a practical choice when exact character-by-character rendering matters in a command-line interface.
It is intended for Windows users working in terminal emulators, shell sessions, and other developer tools that can select a system font. Cascadia Mono PL was originally created for Windows Terminal, while the broader Cascadia family is bundled with Windows Terminal and serves as the default font in Visual Studio. The family also provides standard and cursive italic variants, with the cursive style available through the ss01 OpenType stylistic set when an application supports it.
Available font files include variable and static TTF versions, static OTF files, and WOFF2 files for web use; there is no variable OTF version, and static files do not provide the same hinting quality as variable TTF files. The variable TTF range spans weights from 200 to 700, giving Windows and other TrueType-hinting systems more weight choices.
