About
ChemCanvas lets users draw organic chemical structures and reaction schemes in two dimensions, using modern bond and arrow styles. Developed by Arindam Chaudhuri, it is open-source education software for Linux that focuses on quick, precise chemical sketching.
Documents can contain multiple pages and tabs, making it practical to keep related schemes together. ChemCanvas imports and exports SMILES, MDL Molfile, Marvin Document MRV, and ChemDraw XML CDXML files. Finished work can be saved as PDF, PNG, SVG, or Editable SVG for further editing.
Its bond tools include wavy, cis/trans, bold double, and any-bond variants, while atoms, bonds, and other objects can be colored independently. The editor detects aromaticity and can add delocalization rings, and a substantial template collection speeds up the creation of recurring structures. Users can search PubChem and retrieve compound structures, then use the reagent-label printing tool when preparing laboratory materials.
ChemCanvas suits students, instructors, researchers, and anyone preparing reaction illustrations or chemical documentation. Version 0.14.8 runs on x86_64 (amd64) Linux and requires snapd; developers generating its interface files can use pytqt6-dev-tools.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
