Place one Android phone in the baby’s room and use a second phone with the parent to hear an audio feed between them. The room-side device advertises its presence on the network, while the parent-side device discovers it, connects, and receives the stream. This turns two existing Android phones into a basic baby monitor for listening from another room.

Child Monitor runs on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and later, uses a universal build, and version 1.4 fixes incorrect color scaling in the volume-monitor background. It supports automatic discovery when both phones share Wi-Fi; across different networks, a VPN can provide the connection, but the parent must enter the child device’s IP address manually. Once listening mode starts, the child phone displays its available addresses, including the VPN address, and it usually uses port 10000. This release is incompatible with Child Monitor versions older than 1.0.

The software suits parents monitoring a sleeping child when two Android phones are available. It is a fork of Protect Baby Monitor, whose developer has put that project on hiatus, and it began when no obvious open-source Android baby-monitor option was available in F-Droid. The implementation remains rudimentary: it advertises successfully, accepts clients, and streams audio, while AudioTrack handling, dropped-packet recovery, and GSM operation without internet connectivity remain areas for improvement. Child Monitor is open-source, uses U-law code from the Android Open Source Project under the Apache License 2.0, includes original audio files from Freesound, and was originally created by brarcher.
