Open a Markdown document in Clearance to read it as a rendered page or work directly with its source. View mode presents formatted content, while Edit mode provides full-pane Markdown editing with syntax highlighting. Documents with YAML front matter receive first-class support, making the app useful for notes, project files, and other structured Markdown.

Clearance opens .md and .txt files, keeps a recent-files sidebar showing full paths grouped by recency, and can open selected files in separate windows. A right-side outline lists headings for quick navigation, and links can lead to local files or web URLs. Keyboard commands include ⌘O for opening a Markdown file, ⇧⌘O for opening the current document in a new window, ⌘F and ⇧⌘F for finding text, and ⌘P for printing rendered output.

Editing also supports ⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z for undo and redo, while ⌘1 and ⌘2 switch between View and Edit modes. Normal reading, rendering, and editing run locally, with no CDN dependencies; network access is limited to actions such as opening web links or checking for updates. Sparkle provides in-app updates through Clearance’s Check for Updates… menu command.

Clearance is a native Swift app for MacOS in the Reading & Writing category, available as freeware in version 1.3.5. It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its workspace is structured for future shared Tauri implementations on Windows, Linux, and Android, while the currently shipping application is the MacOS version.
