About
cloc measures a codebase by reporting its blank lines, comment lines, and physical source-code lines across many programming languages. Run from a terminal such as cmd.exe on Windows, it can inspect individual text files, directories, Git repositories, or a selected Git commit, as well as source archives. Given two versions of a codebase, it calculates the changes in all three line categories, providing a practical view of how the code evolved.
It recognizes .tar and compressed tar archives, .zip files, Python wheels (.whl), Jupyter notebooks (.ipynb), source RPMs (.rpm or .src), and Debian packages (.deb). RPM and Debian inputs require rpm2cpio and dpkg-deb respectively, while counting can also be applied to every subdirectory beneath a parent directory containing multiple projects. Reports support --by-percent with --fmt formatting styles, and the Windows release executable is named cloc-2.10.exe, alongside the cloc and cloc-2.10.pl forms used with development or Perl sources. Written entirely in Perl, cloc relies on the standard Perl distribution from version 5.6 onward and embeds code from external modules to remain portable.
Version 2.10 from Al Danial targets Windows x64 and adds language definitions for beluga, C3, CodeQL, DAML, Quxlang, Rhai, and Slang. It skips .venv directory contents, updates the wscript implementation, fixes nested archive handling such as a ZIP inside another ZIP, and accepts process substitution for --sum-reports on Unix-like systems; its README also has an updated BibTeX entry. Developers and other users can use this open-source utility to produce consistent line-count and revision-difference figures from projects, archives, and source histories.
