Conversations lets you exchange encrypted instant messages and media from a mobile device using Jabber/XMPP. It connects to modern Jabber, XMPP, and Snikket servers, while multiple accounts appear in one unified inbox. OMEMO or OpenPGP provides end-to-end encryption by default, and opt-in channel binding adds machine-in-the-middle detection.

You can send images, files, voice messages, emoji reactions, and shared locations in a conversation. Audio and video calls use DTLS-SRTP encryption. Private group chats and public conferences support bookmarks, with moderation tools for conference administrators.

Read indicators, high-resolution avatars, and address-book integration add context to contacts and messages. Conversations synchronizes chats with the Gajim and Dino desktop clients. UnifiedPush can pass notifications to compatible apps including Tusky, Ltt.rs, DAVx⁵, and Fennec. Its straightforward interface follows Material Design 3 with Dynamic Colors and is designed for low battery impact.

The project favors established protocols, privacy, security, and few permissions, and does not require a Google account or specifically Firebase Cloud Messaging. The current 2.21.0+free release is open-source Android software in Internet & Browsers for arm64-v8a devices running version 6.0 or later. Some capabilities depend on server extensions, which you can inspect through Account Details > Server Info.
