About
Core base snap is a free Linux system tool that supplies a shared foundation for snap packages. It contains libraries and dependencies used by many applications, giving packages that depend on it a consistent execution environment. Its runtime is based on Ubuntu 16.04 ESM, also known as Xenial Xerus.
The package also includes snapd binaries in releases where snapd is not installed separately as the snapd snap. Snap packages that require this base normally install it automatically. Only one instance of each type of base snap is installed, and manually removing it may affect system stability.
Snap developers can select this base in their own packages by setting base: core in snapcraft.yaml. Other Ubuntu environment base snaps include Core 18, Core 20, Core 22, and Core 24, providing separate base choices for packages that need them. Core base snap is therefore intended both for the runtime needs of compatible snap packages and for developers building those packages.
In the MirrorNest catalog, the product is categorized under System Tools for the Linux platform. MirrorNest links directly to the official release instead of hosting or mirroring the software itself. This distribution approach lets readers use the catalog to find the package while obtaining it from its official source.
