Core base snap

Core base snap provides the shared runtime foundation that snap packages use to run consistently on Linux systems. It supplies common libraries and dependencies so applications built against it have the same supporting environment across compatible installations. Its runtime is based on Ubuntu 16.04 ESM, also known as Xenial Xerus.

In releases where snapd is not installed separately as the snapd snap, Core base snap also carries the relevant snapd binaries. A snap package that declares this base generally causes it to be installed automatically as part of its own setup. Only one instance of each base-snap type is installed, and manually removing Core base snap can affect system stability.

Canonical publishes it as freeware for Linux with snapd, supporting amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, ppc64el, and s390x systems. The current version is 16-2.61.4-20260225. It is used primarily by people running compatible snap applications and by developers who need a defined runtime target while creating them.

Developers choose this foundation by setting base: core in snapcraft.yaml. Other Ubuntu environment bases include Core 18, Core 20, Core 22, and Core 24, allowing a snap to target a different runtime generation when its dependencies require one. Its role is therefore both behind the scenes for installed applications and directly relevant during snap development.
