Daedalus

Daedalus routes an Android device’s DNS requests through a locally created VPN tunnel, allowing system DNS behavior to be changed without root access. It supports UDP, TCP, DNS over TLS under RFC7858, DNS over HTTPS under RFC8484, and Google’s JSON-based DNS-over-HTTPS method. A DNS-server tester helps users check resolver behavior before selecting a custom DNS server.

The app can apply custom hosts files and DNSMasq configuration, including IPv6 rules, making it useful for managing name resolution or applying local host and filtering rules. It works over mobile-data connections, contains no ads, uses a Material Design interface, and is designed for extremely low power consumption. These capabilities suit Android users who need custom DNS handling while traveling, on cellular networks, or on devices where root access is unavailable.

Daedalus runs on Android 5.0 or later; Android 7.1 or later is recommended for launcher shortcuts, and its Universal architecture covers supported Android devices. Version 1.15.0 is open-source and belongs to the Internet & Browsers category. Users should follow applicable local laws and regulations when configuring DNS services and resolver rules.

The current release adds support for SDK 31, recognizes more DNSMasq rules, and includes many optimizations. It also marks Daedalus’s initial F-Droid release.
