Dangerzone0.11.0

Drop an untrusted PDF, Office document, or image into Dangerzone and receive a reconstructed PDF intended to be safe to open. It converts the input inside a sandbox, first rendering each page into raw RGB pixel data and then rebuilding those pixels as a new PDF. This process discards the original document structure while preserving the visible page content.

Dangerzone supports more than 20 file types, including PDFs, all major office-suite formats, and common image formats. Its sandbox operates without network access, so a malicious document that compromises the conversion process cannot use it to notify anyone. This makes it suited to handling files whose trustworthiness is unclear, such as attachments received by email.

Journalists and other people who routinely process unfamiliar documents can use it as a local sanitization step before opening or sharing the resulting PDF. The project is maintained by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, a nonprofit that protects and defends press freedom. Version 0.11.0 is intended for macOS on Apple Silicon (arm64) and is distributed as freeware.
