About
Compare two files with Difftastic by their syntax, so the output centers on structural changes rather than raw character sequences. This helps reveal what actually changed when rearranged code, formatting edits, or nested additions would make a line-oriented diff noisy or misleading. Difftastic is a command-line program, making it suitable for developers examining source changes directly or incorporating structural comparisons into a Git workflow.
It parses code with tree-sitter and produces diffs designed to be accurate and readable for humans. If a formatter splits one expression across several lines, it can recognize unchanged inner content instead of reporting a wholesale change. When a wrapper is added, it matches the delimiters and can still isolate the added wrapper even when the enclosed content changes too.
The display uses the actual line numbers from each file, before and after the change, rather than relying on unfamiliar hunk notation alone. It handles supported programming languages and file formats, with the complete language and format coverage described in its manual. Version 0.72.0 is published by Wilfred Hughes for Windows, and the freeware is distributed under the MIT license.

What's new in v0.72.0
Difftastic is a structural diff tool that understands syntax. See the manual to get started, and the changelog for historical changes.
Diffing
Improved preprocessing heuristics, so difftastic should be faster and fall back to text diffing less often.
Parsing
Updated Haskell (the previous version was prone to crashing) and Kotlin parsers.
Improved delimiter and trailing punctuation handling in:C, C++, C#, Elixir, Erlang, Gleam, Go, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Haskell, Nix, OCaml, Python, TypeScript and YAML.
Removed Smali support (upstream parser is no longer maintained).
Removed support for Verilog and F# due to the very large parser size making the difft binary big. Adding support for dynamically loading parsers in a future release should allow users to parse these languages again.
Display
Fixed an issue with inline display where unchanged lines between two nearby changes were not shown.
Fixed an issue (introduced in 0.71) where the terminal width wasn't detected when stdin, stdout and stderr were all redirected. This was most noticeable when using difft with jj.
