Its diagramming canvas supports the connectors, shapes, layout tools, and collaboration features needed to explain systems, workflows, software designs, and business processes. Shared cursors let teams work on the same diagram together, making it practical for planning sessions and distributed project work.

Diagrams can be embedded interactively in documentation, wikis, and applications, or exported as SVG, PNG, or PDF files for sharing and presentation. Native integrations with other work tools let users work with connected services without relying on repeated import and export steps. Files created as far back as 2005 remain loadable in the current application, while draw.io files can be opened and edited on any platform.

Users can store data where they choose, including local storage through the desktop app, and draw.io states that it cannot access that data. No sign-up is required to begin creating diagrams, and the open-source Apache 2.0 licensing includes no Enterprise tier for SSO. The Linux desktop edition is Productivity software from draw.io, with version 32.6.10 requiring Linux with snapd on x86_64 (amd64) hardware.
