electronic-wechat is an unofficial WeChat client for Linux. It provides a desktop-oriented way to use the WeChat web application through a locally running program. The application is built with Electron and belongs to the communication category.

The client is based on the WeChat Web App, which means access depends on being able to log in through that web service. Tencent has restricted new-user logins from the web application for some users, so electronic-wechat may not be usable if the required web login is unavailable. Users who can log in to WeChat Web can continue using the client through that access. The open-source license also allows the program to be examined and used under the terms of its license.

If the application window is closed but the program continues running, its icon may not be visible in the usual desktop area. On GNOME, the TopIcons extension can be installed to make the top tray icon visible. This supports a workflow in which the client remains available while its main window is not open.
