electronic-wechat lets users read and send WeChat messages from a desktop window instead of relying on a browser, presenting a desktop-oriented WeChat experience for macOS and Linux. On Linux, it is an unofficial, community-developed communication client. Built with Electron, the program runs locally while providing access to the WeChat Web application.

Its operation depends on successful authentication through WeChat Web. Tencent has restricted new-user sign-ins to the web application for some users, so electronic-wechat may be unusable when that web login route is unavailable. People who can sign in to WeChat Web can continue using their account through this client.

The program can keep running after its main window is closed, although its icon may then disappear from the usual desktop area. GNOME users can install the TopIcons extension to expose the program’s icon in the top tray and keep the client readily available in the background.

Version 2.0 requires Linux and snapd, and supports x86_64 (amd64) systems. It is distributed under an open-source license, allowing its code to be examined and the software to be used under that license’s terms.
