Electrum gives users a Bitcoin wallet for holding, sending, and receiving funds while its thin-client design avoids maintaining the entire blockchain locally. It suits Bitcoin users who want a desktop wallet for everyday transactions or access to their funds from an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac. A plugin system allows the wallet to be extended with additional capabilities supplied through the Electrum plugin ecosystem.

The project is open source and has been continuously developed since 2011, when Thomas Voegtlin created it, with contributions from other developers since then. Users can verify distributed binaries with GPG signatures: Electrum binaries are signed with ThomasV’s public key, and a replaced file would fail that signature check. Reproducible release distributables must be signed by at least ThomasV and SomberNight, adding a verifiable provenance check to published builds.

The current 4.8.2 MacOS build supports Intel and Apple Silicon architecture and is offered under a freeware license, meaning the listed build has no purchase price. The project also provides editions for Windows, Linux, and Android. Plugins, official announcements on X and nostr, community questions on Bitcointalk and Reddit, and bug reports through GitHub give users several ways to extend or discuss the wallet.

ElectrumX is the project’s official Python implementation, while Electrs provides an alternative implementation in Rust; a server-status resource lists Bitcoin Electrum servers. Windows users should know that antivirus heuristics can produce false positives for Electrum binaries, which the project advises addressing by checking their GPG signatures.
