With ext4-win-driver, Windows can browse an ext4 SD card or USB stick after the bundled ExtFsWatcher service detects it and mounts it on a free drive letter in the active console session through WinFsp. Removing the media causes a clean unmount, while WinFsp.Launcher connects the filesystem driver to Explorer. The driver can mount ext4 volumes read-write by default, or use read-only mode with the CLI’s --ro option and the Explorer verb’s -ReadOnly switch.

Explorer adds a Mount as ext4 command for .img files, allowing disk images to be inspected offline. Its command-line browser can open an ext4 image or raw device without mounting and provides info, ls, stat, cat, tree, parts, and audit operations. Partition handling includes MBR and GPT parsing, selecting a partition with --part N, and sector-aligned raw-device reads for 4Kn and other advanced-format drives.

Read-write support covers creating, writing, truncating, renaming, deleting files and directories, making directories, and updating timestamps; streaming positional writes use pwrite so large files do not require the entire file to be processed at once. The tool suits Windows users examining Raspberry Pi root-filesystem cards, removable Linux media, or disk images, and its CLI also works on macOS and Linux for testing. Setup.exe bundles the WinFsp redistributable through a Burn bootstrapper and the official MSI, allowing the prerequisite to be handled within one installer.
