Firezone lets administrators give users controlled access to applications, services, and private networks instead of placing those resources behind a conventional VPN. As a zero-trust access platform built on WireGuard®, it connects people to resources wherever they are through manageable access policies, without tedious configuration. Policies can consider real-time conditions such as device location and time of day, while the management view shows every authorized connection by user, resource, or policy.

Users and groups synchronize automatically with an identity provider, so access can follow organizational onboarding and offboarding. Lightweight Linux Gateway binaries can be deployed where access is needed and configured with a token through the administrator’s preferred tool. Firezone clients are available across major platforms, require no configuration, and remain connected when a device changes Wi-Fi networks. With two or more Gateways, automatic load balancing and failover can maintain availability as deployments grow.

Its hole-punching technology conceals protected resources from the public internet, reducing their exposed attack surface. This suits businesses securing internal applications, data services, and distributed networks for staff or other authorized users, while the WireGuard foundation is described as three to four times faster than OpenVPN. Firezone’s entire codebase is open source, allowing organizations to audit what the platform does.

On macOS, the current 1.5.20 release requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The software is freeware in the Security & Privacy category.
