FreeMat4.2.0

FreeMat lets engineers and scientists prototype calculations quickly and process data in an interactive environment. It is designed for engineering experiments, scientific computing, and testing ideas before turning them into larger workflows. Its numerical workspace follows conventions familiar to users of MATLAB and IDL while remaining open-source software published by Fave Oled.

The environment supports codeless connections to external C, C++, and FORTRAN code, along with parallel and distributed algorithm development through MPI. It also provides advanced volume and 3D visualization capabilities for examining multidimensional results. Built-in online help is available directly from the FreeMat console, making the program useful in classrooms, laboratories, and engineering development work.

The current version is 4.2.0 for Linux, requires snapd, and targets x86_64 (amd64) systems. FreeMat 4.2 included bug fixes, cleaned-up tests and documentation, documentation migrated to Doxygen, and improvements to its just-in-time backend; its build instructions also covered Linux, Mac OS X, and Mingw32, with 64-bit support across those platforms. After each startup, set the toolbox location with rootpath('/usr/share/freemat/toolbox') so its toolbox files are located correctly. The project is no longer maintained, so users should account for that limitation when adopting it. A Google Group offers support that anyone can read, while posting requires membership and messages are moderated.
