About

GNU nano lets users create and edit plain-text files through a compact, straightforward editor interface on Linux. Inspired by Pico, the ncurses-based editor associated with the Pine mailer package, it was developed as a replacement for that editor while adding capabilities for everyday text work.

Undo and redo, line numbering, syntax coloring, and soft wrapping keep editing manageable, including when lines extend beyond the display. Holding Shift selects text, while interactive search and replacement can use regular expressions to locate and change matching content. Users can jump directly to a chosen line and column, edit several files through separate buffers, and rely on automatic indentation.

Filename and search-term completion reduce repetitive typing, and runtime feature toggles let users adjust behavior while working. The editor also provides full internationalization for users working in different languages and supports routine tasks such as revising text, finding content, replacing matches, and navigating long files.

GNU nano (UNOFFICIAL) is maintained by the Snapcrafters community rather than endorsed or officially maintained by the upstream GNU nano developers. Version 9.2 is distributed for Linux on x86_64 (amd64) systems, requires Linux with snapd, and is released under an open-source license.

Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
