Google Authenticator generates a changing verification code on an Android phone that you enter alongside your password when signing in, adding a second barrier against account hijacking. As a System Tools app from Google, it supports two-step verification for online accounts and can produce codes without a network or cellular connection. It is intended for anyone whose accounts use this additional sign-in step, including people securing Google Accounts and other compatible services.

Accounts can be added by scanning their QR codes, which requires camera access during setup, and multiple accounts can be kept together in one app. The code engine handles both time-based and counter-based methods, while QR-code transfer helps move accounts between devices. Codes can also synchronize with a Google Account and across devices, so they remain accessible if the phone is lost; using Authenticator with a Google Account requires enabling 2-Step Verification on that account first.

The current Android release is version 7.2, and its cloud-sync capability now keeps Authenticator codes available across devices through Google Account synchronization. A new Privacy Screen can lock access behind the phone’s screen lock, PIN, or biometric protection.
