Run Grin’s blockchain node from a terminal and use its wallet to create an account or send and receive Grin transactions. Published by Quentin Le Sceller, Grin is open-source software that connects users to the Grin digital currency project. It implements Grin as a privacy-preserving currency based on the Mimblewimble protocol, keeping transaction amounts and addresses out of public view. Mimblewimble also lets transactions be aggregated for more efficient storage and allows older transaction data to be removed without compromising security.

The Grin Snap bundles the blockchain node and the grin.wallet command-line wallet. Entering grin in a terminal starts the node with its default settings, while grin.wallet help displays the wallet commands available for account and transaction management. The software suits people operating Grin infrastructure or handling the currency directly through terminal-based tools.

The current v5.1.0 build requires Linux and snapd, and targets x86_64 (amd64) hardware. During a refresh, it can report a logfile-creation error when configuration paths point to a version-specific Snap directory rather than the current path. The affected paths can be changed with sed -i 's/grin\/[0-9]\/.grin/grin\/current\/.grin/g' ~/snap/grin/current/.grin/main/grin-*.toml. Removing and reinstalling the Grin Snap is an alternative, but the blockchain must synchronize again afterward. Using Grin through Snap may reduce privacy because IP addresses and usage patterns can be tracked.
