Headphone indicator adds a status-bar notification icon when headphones are plugged into an Android phone, making the current audio connection visible at a glance. It uses a separate icon when the connected device is a headset, so users can distinguish the two accessory types. Both conventional 3.5 mm audio-jack devices and USB headphones or headsets are supported.

The app must be opened at least once after installation, after which a background service monitors the connection and displays the appropriate headset-status icon whenever headphones are attached. It is deliberately tiny and keeps its scope to this indicator, with no advertisements or analytics. That makes it useful for people who want a persistent visual reminder of an attached audio accessory, such as when switching between phone speakers, wired headphones, and a USB headset.

Headphone indicator suits everyday phone use, especially when the device’s built-in connection feedback is easy to miss or does not clearly distinguish a headset from headphones. The current 1.1.1 release requires Android 4.4 or later and is provided as a universal architecture build. It is open-source, allowing its focused implementation to be inspected, and its background indicator requires no companion audio application.
