About

Build and test fluid-power and mechatronic systems by connecting component models, running simulations, and examining the resulting behavior in Hopsan. Originally created for fluid power, it also models electric power, mechanical systems, flight, and vehicle dynamics, making it useful for engineering education, research, and multidisciplinary system studies. Its distinctive modelling approach uses bi-directional delay lines, or transmission-line elements (TLM), alongside signal-flow diagrams built from mathematical operators and functions.

The graphical interface supports drag-and-drop, power-port-based modelling and reusable subsystems. Interactive animation shows a simulated system in real time or playback, while result tools provide variable sensitivity studies and frequency-domain analysis based on simulation data. Results can be exported to CSV, XML, Gnuplot, HDF5, and Matlab formats for further processing.

The plain C++ simulation-core library supports integration into other software, and developers can create component libraries in C++ with a supported subset of Modelica; the embedded numhop language provides another modelling and calculation option. HopsanCLI can be called from external programs, save results to files, run model validation, or generate validation datasets, while HCOM and Python enable scripting. FMI co-simulation FMUs can be imported and exported, and models can be exported to Matlab/Simulink.

Simulations and optimization can use multiple local CPU cores or networked computers through the Hopsan simulation server application. Published by Peter Nordin, Hopsan 2.22.1.20240926.1025 is open-source Linux software in the Education category, requiring snapd and targeting x86_64 (amd64) systems.
