Search a personal mail collection from the command line and inspect matching messages without browsing maildirs one by one. maildir-utils indexes maildir content, provides message searching and viewing commands, and includes an Emacs user interface. Its search criteria cover senders, recipients, subjects, date ranges, sizes, priorities, message text, and message flags.

Queries can also target message IDs, particular maildirs, tags, and attachment properties such as file names, MIME types, and text inside attachments. The indexer identifies encrypted and signed messages, new or replied-to messages, and messages containing attachments. Accent and case normalization allows related forms such as “angstrom” and “Ångström” to match.

Alongside retrieval, maildir-utils can add or remove messages, create maildirs, extract attachments, export address lists, and search those lists. It works with mail clients including mutt and Wanderlust, while mu4e supplies an Emacs email client built around it.
