About
mapscii renders geographic vector-tile data directly in a console, turning map information into a visual display made from Braille characters and ASCII art. It brings a view of the world into an xterm-compatible terminal, allowing geographic information to be examined without leaving a text-based environment.
Built with Node.js, the program converts vector-tile geometry into compact terminal graphics that can be read in ordinary console output. Its Braille and ASCII rendering approach makes map structure visible through text characters, giving terminal users a distinct way to explore cartographic data.
mapscii is intended for learners, educators, and technically inclined users who want to demonstrate or inspect maps in classroom exercises, terminal sessions, or other educational contexts. It is developed by Nathan Haines and is released as open-source software in the Education category.
The current version is 0.3.1, and it runs on Linux systems with snapd. It targets x86_64 hardware, also referred to as amd64, and requires an xterm-compatible terminal for its rendered display.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
