About
Use maxima to manipulate mathematical expressions symbolically, investigate mathematical structures, and perform calculations beyond ordinary numerical arithmetic. It provides a full-fledged computer algebra environment for people studying or applying algebra, calculus, matrices, and related areas. Polynomials, matrices, and rational functions can be transformed symbolically, giving users a way to examine results rather than only calculate decimal values.
The system performs integration, graphing, and bigfloat calculations, and it includes Todd-Coxeter functionality for working with mathematical structures. These capabilities suit symbolic experimentation, computational mathematics, and exercises where exact forms or high-precision values matter. Its foundations come from Macsyma, the computer algebra system developed at MIT during the 1970s.
A source-level symbolic debugger is included for inspecting maxima code while it runs. Extensive self-tests accompany the program and provide built-in checks for its behavior. The bundled offline manual can be opened in an external web browser when a browser-based presentation is more convenient.
Peter Pall is the developer and publisher. Version 5.50.0 is distributed as open-source software for Linux, requires snapd, and supports x86_64 (amd64) systems.
