Mercurygram lets Android users sign in to Telegram and exchange messages with contacts through an open-source client. It supports private chats, group conversations, and sharing different kinds of content, while Telegram stores the resulting messages and conversations in its cloud. The client preserves Telegram’s emphasis on fast, secure messaging for people who prefer an alternative to the standard proprietary application.

Mercurygram removes several proprietary components included in the original Telegram app, including Google Play Services for location features, HockeySDK for self-updates, and Google Cloud Messaging for push notifications. Location sharing is provided through OpenStreetMap instead. New Telegram accounts cannot be created in this FOSS edition, so users must create an account in the official Telegram build before logging in with Mercurygram.
